Taste and See

O taste and see that the Lord is good. -Psalm 34:8 (NRSV)

THE bakery department of our local grocery store gives away samples of cakes, cookies, and pies in the hope that shoppers will taste and then buy the products. A small sign says, "Try this. We know you will like it." I have tried the samples and agree.

In a similar way, David experienced the goodness of God. David pleaded with God in times of crisis, and God answered him. Having experienced God's love and mercy, David invites others to do the same. When he writes, "O taste and see that the LORD is good," he is saying, "Come, trust in God; find satisfaction in the Lord."

The Lord is good. God created us and gave us life. God loves us and provides for our needs. Jesus died on the cross to pay for our sins and rose again to give us life eternal. He calls us to fellowship with him.

As a youth, I wandered in a spiritual wilderness for many years. But through my friends the Spirit kept prodding me to experience God's love and forgiveness. Finally I surrendered. The Christian way is not easy, but the Lord -- through the psalmist -- still invites us, "Come, taste, and see." If we do, we will find ourselves returning again and again.

Thank you, O God, for inviting us to taste and experience your goodness. We pray that many people may accept your gracious invitation. Amen.
